Text extractions of the State Archives of Caserta
We are experimenting with models for the integrated process of digital acquisition, automatic recognition, text transcription, and indexing. The objects of interest are a group of Bourbon manuscripts from the archival collection of the Royal Intendency of the State of Caserta. These operations have been made possible thanks to the collaboration of “Direzione generale Archivi” and the State Archives of Caserta. The collaboration is part of the agreement available for download at the link below. We thank the “Direzione generale Archivi” for granting permission to publish the acquired materials.

The Registro di Lettere della Real Azienda di San Leucio (vol. 162 of the historical archive known as “della Reggia”) reveals the workings of a complex and highly operational administration, characterized by a strong centralization around the figure of the Duke of Miranda, Superintendent of San Leucio, who required detailed reports and constantly monitored the activities of his officials.

The Copia Dispacci dell'Amministrazione del Real Sito di San Leucio, (vol. 166 of the historical archive known as “della Reggia”) shows intense activity and the Crown’s attention to various aspects of life and the economy of the Site, exercised through the oversight of the Secretary of State, Marquis Giuseppe Ruffo. The semi-automatic transcription was carried out for the Dispacci covering the period from October 1820 to December 1821.

The first volume selected for digitization and text recognition is Platea di Caserta (vol. 3558 of the historical archive known as “della Reggia”). The volume is part of the subseries “Platee del Sancio”, consisting of five volumes relating to Caserta, Valle, Durazzano, San Leucio, and Carditello. These were commissioned by King Francis I to the administrator of the State of Caserta, Cav. Antonio Sancio, with the aim of obtaining a comprehensive survey of the Crown’s possessions in the territory. They were produced between the 1820s and 1830s.
Platea dei Reali Siti di Carditello e Calvi
The Platea di Carditello (vol. 3571 of the historical archive known as “della Reggia”) was commissioned and compiled during the same years in which Cavaliere Antonio Sancio, Administrator of Caserta and San Leucio, was finishing his monumental work on the other Royal Sites. The primary purpose of this volume was the legal verification and detailed cataloguing of the Crown’s properties and rights in the territory of Carditello and Calvi.
